Systems biology is a new field that seeks to integrate high-throughput biological studies with other scientific disciplines including mathematics, engineering and computer sciences to model how biological systems function. This new discipline is key to a full understanding of the life sciences and is already shaping strategies for the funding of biosciences.
Systems Biology is an extremely timely and important volume in the Annual Plant Reviews Series. The Editors of the book have drawn together a very impressive, able and internationally respected set of authors. The book is broadly divided into four sections. Commencing with an introductory section covering basic principles, the book's second section covers models for systems biology and includes details of microbes, yeast and C. elegans. Section three deals with plant genomics and includes chapters on Arabidopsis, small RNAs, proteomics, transcriptional hard wiring, metabolomics and ionomics. The books final section looks at network integration, transcriptional networks and root development, modelling in plant growth, plants in the environment, and evolution and self organization.
Systems Biology is essential reading for all those working in biological sciences, particularly those involved in plant sciences, molecular, cell and developmental biology and genetics. Libraries in all research establishments and universities where biological sciences are studied and taught will need copies of this landmark publication on their shelves.
